Exploration
Todd Energy has been a leading New Zealand oil and gas explorer for over 70 years. Our extensive exploration programme is focused on searching for new gas and oil reserves for the security of New Zealand's future energy supply.
To date exploration for oil and gas in New Zealand has been largely concentrated in Taranaki Basin . This large sedimentary basin underlies the Taranaki Peninsula and extends offshore from the top of the South Island to just south of Auckland. All commercial oil and gas discoveries in New Zealand are located in the Taranaki Basin and well-developed oil and gas infrastructure exist in and around New Plymouth.
As well as managing our current permits, Todd Energy is constantly re-evaluating and assessing new opportunities to ensure a secure energy supply for all New Zealanders well into the future.
Taranaki Permits
Currently Todd Energy's petroleum acreage in the Taranaki Basin includes interests in six petroleum mining permits and Todd Energy also holds a further ten petroleum exploration permits (both onshore and offshore). Of the ten Taranaki Basin exploration permits, Todd Energy operates two on a 100% basis - the northern offshore permit PEP 38602, containing the Karewa gas discovery, and the onshore permit PEP 51156. A further two permits are operated by Todd Energy in joint venture with other exploration companies - PEP 51313 in the offshore southern Taranaki Basin, and PEP 51149 onshore western Taranaki Peninsula. The other six exploration permits are held in non-operated joint ventures.
New Ventures
Todd Energy's exploration team regularly investigates new business opportunities in the Taranaki Basin, in other New Zealand basins, and internationally, either by evaluating farm-ins offered by other companies or participating in study groups to assess Block Offers and Acreage Releases.
The Exploration Team
Todd Energy's Exploration team in Wellington comprises five experienced professional geoscientists. The team is supported by Todd's New Plymouth based specialists in petroleum engineering, facilities engineering and project management, drilling, well services and production operations. The team uses state-of-the-art computer hardware and software such as Landmark and SMT geophysical and geological interpretation systems.
