Todd Energy owns a 35% share of regional electricity retailer and generator, King Country Energy Limited that operates and owns four hydro power generation plants in the King Country region.

Kuratau Hydro Station

The Kuratau station was commissioned in 1962. Water is channelled down an open canal to a top screen with an earthquake gate from lake Kuratau.

The two penstock pipes are both constructed from concrete until the surge chamber, from there on they are steel, each one feeds its own turbine.

Mokauiti Hydro Station

The Mokauiti station was commissioned in 1963. Situated on the side of the Mokauiti river, the water is dammed approximately 1km upstream of the station, then piped through a hill to drive two turbines.

Piriaka Hydro Station

The Piriaka station was commissioned in 1924. Situated on the side of the Wanganui river, a small open canal leads to a underground penstock which forks just before the station. Originally the station was built to supply electricity to Taumarunui. In 1938 an agreement was signed with the Government to connect the local system to the national grid as a result of Taumarunui's population growth. An additional generator was added in 1971.

Wairere Hydro Station

The Wairere station was commissioned in 1925 with only one turbine. Three more turbines were added between 1938 and 1981. The dam is 3.5 metres high and is located above the Wairere falls on the Mokau river.
