Generation

To complement Todd Energy’s extensive hydrocarbon exploration and production assets and capabilities, Todd Energy also generates electricity from a mix of hydro, geothermal and gas-fired co-generation plants.

Although Todd Energy’s roots lay in the gas and oil sector, this has not stopped us from building one of the most diversified electricity generation portfolios in the country.

All Todd Energy electricity generation is in the North Island Todd Energy's generation portfolio includes three gas fired co-generation plantsof New Zealand and nearly all is based adjacent to our customer markets.  Our electricity portfolio includes gas-fired co-generation plants, an award winning hydro station as well as two stations that harness renewable geothermal energy.  This truly diversified portfolio has been built up over the years providing us with the skills and knowledge to tackle a wide range of generation projects.

Co-generation

Todd Energy holds interests in highly efficient co-generation plants at Kapuni, Edgecumbe and at Fonterra's milk processing plant in Hawera – the largest single-site dairy factory in the world.  These assets directly utilise Todd Energy’s access to natural gas and expertise to Naturally occurring geothermal heat is harnessed to produce electricity at Bay of Plenty Energy's Kawerau geothermal plantsprovide our customers with a total energy solution to meet their business gas, electricity and steam requirements.

Geothermal

At Kawerau, in the geothermal-rich Bay of Plenty region, Todd Energy owns and operates two geothermal plants that supply energy to the local region.  These facilities – known as TOI and TG2 - utilise geothermal energy to heat a motive fluid in a closed loop system to drive turbines that in turn spin generators to produce electricity.

Renewable hydro generation is used to produce electricity and storage lakes provide recreational opportunities for the regions they are located in Hydro

Our hydro-generation assets include the award-winning Aniwhenua station in the Bay of Plenty and the historic Mangahao station with its newly commissioned mini-hydro station in Horowhenua.  These assets are complemented by Todd Energy’s 35% interest in King Country Energy with its four hydro generation plants in the central North Island.

This ability to offer electricity as well as gas and LPG means that Todd Energy is a truly integrated energy supplier that remains focused on meeting the specific energy and service needs of our customers throughout New Zealand.

This diversity also allows Todd Energy to provide expert advice and present a complete fuel and energy package that is customised to our customer’s requirements.

Ongoing commitment to securing future generation

Todd Energy is continuously evaluating opportunities, both directly and through its subsidiary Bay of Plenty Energy, to increase generation capacity to meet New Zealand's growing energy needs.

Current projects include the proposed Upper Kaituna Hydroelectric Power Scheme, a gas fired generation plant at the Happy Valley land fill site to utilise methane generated by decomposing land fill and a possible gas fired generation plant near Todd Energy's McKee/Mangahewa production facility.
